I think Groundhog day is stupid. I've tried to get into the fun of it but somehow weather forecasting rodents don't do it for me. Shoot the stupid bugger and make him into a pair of slippers, I say. At least then the damn fellow would be of some use. Actually I love Groundhogs... they are so cute.... but to have them coming out of their burrows on the second of February to predict when spring will be here, is down right dumb.

Actually, a B. C. naturalist, some years ago, advocated that we should be ignoring Groundhog Day and instead doing "Marmot Day" around May 1. That's when the Vancouver Island Marmots start to come out of hibernation. And probably some of the high mountain, mainland marmots as well. I'm all for it. By the beginning of May, even here, we can start thinking "Spring", more or less. And who cares if there are shadows or not? Any excuse for a celebration. (V. I. Marmots are also 'way cuter than Groundhogs - even though they're sort of cousins. I haven't been there for ages, but there is a really neat website about them somewhere "out there".)
If you remember the website then do pass it on.... meanwhile I love groundhogs when I see them trying to cross the highway in late April and early May and I've never seen a Marmot...I just haven't been up in any alpines... would love to see one.
Teapot always brings home pictures of them when he is hiking on mountains with the Rangers...I would love to see one... and not just in a picture.
Actually, just search for "Vancouver Island Marmot". (I did just that after posting my comment.) Unfortunately the page doesn't seem to have been updated for a couple of years, but there are still lots of photos and information. I guess they've been too busy breeding and reintrducing marmots to spare much for the "frills". (The V. I. Marmot nearly went extinct and is still in precarious shape though coming along.) Actually, you can buy "stuffed" V.I. marmots - I got one some years ago and it's really cute, as well as easier to keep than the live ones!
Hmm - obviously I need to work on "actually"; I'm definitely overworking that word! Sorry 'bout that.
